My Son has been attending classes at Pro Martial Arts Kenwood since 2015. Master Damien, Miss Kara and Mr. David have been instrumental in teaching my son the true meaning of respect and honor. They also have engrained in him a level of discipline that is above and beyond that of his similarly aged peers. As a result of his training at Pro Martial Arts, my son has developed advanced levels of focus and self control. I couldn't be happier. I truly appreciate all you have done and continue to do.

My son loves his instructors at Pro Martial. They definitely go above and beyond the call of duty to train kids. We have been going there for more than a year and we only have good things to say about PMA. My son made good friends at this dojo and he looks forward to go train every day. My son has learned values along with self-defense skills. PMA made him very independent and focused. This is the place to go if you want your kids to learn motivational life skills along with martial art techniques.

This space and review does not give enough justice to Ms. Kara, Mr. Damien and the PRO Martial Arts-Kenwood family. I call them family because they are very supportive and work together to benefit the kids who are attending the classes. My son, Sami, joined the group in 2014. He is a preemie, so he is smaller than his peers, and he was starting to catch up with them. My wife and I decided to join PRO Martial Arts Kenwood to give him a boost of confidence, work on his motor skills, have discipline and respect, and get stronger. I remember when Sami started he could barely jump and do many of the exercises that other kids were doing. After 2 years being there, Ms. Kara and Mr. Damien worked with Sami. He finished all the stripped belts and now he is in the solid belts phase. He has discipline, respect, strength, etc. I highly recommend joining PRO Martial Arts Kenwood. Great people, great program, great family, and very beneficial to your kids.

I have two sons that attend Pro Martial Arts. My oldest has been in attendance since the opening three years ago. With the assistance of Mr. Damien and Ms. Kara, he has found his voice. He is confident in his abilities AND the abilities of his peers. He is capable of standing up for himself and those who need help. He is focused on his training to be a black belt but the training he has received in life, is irreplaceable. I am thankful for the dedication and support from the staff at PMA. My four year old is now ready to enter preschool this year because he's spent the last few months practicing mind, body and eye focus. PMA is so much more than just "karate".

We have been very impressed with Pro Martial Arts - Kenwood. The instructors are fantastic! They are very dedicated, patient and make each class challenging but also fun for the students. We've seen a huge increase in the confidence and leadership skills of our children in the 3 years we've been with Pro Martial Arts and would highly recommend it to anyone interested.

My two girls have been going to this dojo for more than a year. I really like their curriculum and the way the instructors approach teaching it. Every class is different, so things are never repetitive. There is a lot of fun and encouragement. My girls enjoy PMA and it’s because of the positive instructors at this dojo. They are great at getting the kids to put in that extra effort all the while making them smile and have a good positive experience!

My husband and two sons have been part of the family class for about the last six months and they absolutely love it! They are eager to go to class, to learn and to improve. This is the first extracurricular activity that has really captured their attention. On top of that Master Damien, Ms. Kara and Mr. David are great teachers!

We have been part of the Pro Martial Arts family for 4 years now and very happy about it. Started our journey with our son on kids class and now we are a martial arts family.
We like the partnership with the instructors to use martial arts as part of the education for our kids, as well as the physical challenge, the methodology and the overall atmosphere in classes.
Classes have a great environment where masters and classmates challenge and help each other in the journey. No matter what is your previous background in martial arts, you will find a path to grow and people to help you in your journey.

I was in Taekwondo when I was younger and I really wanted to get back into martial arts (as well as introduce my 9 year old son to it). I had been looking for a Martial Arts school that was more than just basic fitness course or constant sparring. Pro Martial Arts was perfect. The instructors are always very friendly and very knowledgeable. They take the time to really teach form, technique and purpose, not just fighting. When they say they are a family, they mean it as well. They have taken the time to learn about me and my son, what our goals are, and really work to tailor specific instructions to help us get better, not just teach a cookie-cutter class. This is an excellent school and I highly recommend it.

I would like to share with you what my family received in these past 4 years: support, strength, commitment, but most importantly a place where you can feel respected, accepted and empowered.

Our relocation to Cincinnati 6 years ago was very difficult for my daughter Maia. She was 3 1/2 years old and she didn't want to speak, eat or play with other kids. She was sad and we were sadder. I didn't know what to do. I found Pro Martial Arts Kenwood by chance and decided to give it a try even though we were not used to martial arts of any kind. I met Kara Hannah and Damien Hannah and I immediately believed this would be a good place for her, but I couldn't anticipate how much we were going to be gifted with.

Maia is almost 9 years old and she has become a strong girl, who feels that practice and discipline turn into achievements. She knows how to speak up or stand up if she faces a bullying situation, not only to herself but to others. I'm more than grateful to Pro Martial Arts Kenwood and the two amazing people that are behind it.

You might find other places to learn martial arts; but if you are looking for a place where your kids can learn values at the same time, this should be your choice.

Friendly staff, strong program with emphasis on tenants of martial arts and fitness. I have lost inches and gained muscle tone. They help me grow stronger in mind and body. I love this place.

We signed our 15-year old daughter up for her first lesson about a year ago. Although she was very hesitant in the beginning, the staff at PMA Kenwood has made this her favorite activity. Not only has she learned vital self defense skills, she has gained confidence in her ability to be an athlete and a strong, disciplined girl. We consider ourselves lucky to have found Mr. Damien and Miss Kara.

Pro Martial Arts is great about making things fun and interactive for a children. Even though the training is all about discipline and focus Pro Martial Arts is good at balancing that with allowing the child to let loose and enjoy their time training. Our son has developed tremendously from this experience.

We have been joining the family class for over a year and we absolutely love it. The instructors offers a friendly environment with personalized focus for each child or adult to learn at its own pace while staying challenged. Attending the family class is something we look forward every week. From a dojo perspective, location is great, facility is comfortable and well kept.

My daughter is 3 years old and has done both the Kinder Kicks and the Little Rhinos classes and has had an absolute blast! The dojo is very clean and organized. The instructors are very knowledgeable, personable and professional- what a skill to be able to teach toddlers all the way through adults! I love the self-discipline, coordination and confidence she has built through her classes - she has really blossomed! Highly recommend!

We have only had great experiences here. The mix of martial arts curriculum has done both of my kids wonders! They have been attending for 5+ years now and have continued to grow. The personal feel and relationships built with the instructors as well as other families at PMA are important to my family. I would recommend PMA to every family!

Attunement

Do you ever feel like you can read your child’s mind?  You know what they are going to do or say next because they have had the same reaction before?  This is attunement.  Improving your attunement skills will allow you to create a more patient and understanding relationship with your child.

  1. Modify Your Child’s Behavior:

Be attuned to your child’s anxieties and try a creative approach that allows them to focus on positive behaviors and interactions instead of their anxieties or stresses.

If you are attuned to the fact that your child has anxiety about going to school in the morning, for instance, help them relieve their stress by adding some interactive play time with them before school.  This will boost their endorphins, so they feel good and less stressed.  Allowing them to run off some of their energy in the morning creates a positive and consistent change in their behavior.

  1. Wait for the Right time

Applying patience is an attunement-builder because when you understand your child’s mood you can eliminate some of the common struggles you have with them.

If your child wakes up happy most mornings, but grumpy after naps on the weekend (like my son!), you are already attuned to expect that behavior.  It might be better to wait, or to be patient, until they feel a little less grumpy to talk to them or ask them to do something. You will get better results that way, and they will be less grumpy when they respond.

  1. Understand Your Child’s Stage of Development

Being attuned to your child’s stages of development will break some of the assumptions that you have about them, which will improve your relationship and understanding with your child.

When you ask a 3 to 4-year old to sit on the floor, they seem to roll around a lot.  Are they not paying attention?  Chances are that part of their behavior is due to their physical stage of development.  Physically, it is uncomfortable in their core muscles to sit on the floor for long without rolling back.

Similarly, 10 to 14-year old’s seem lazy.  They look like they do not have enough energy to take the trash out after watching a movie.  What’s really going on here? Research shows that they are literally physically, scientifically exhausted.  Their body and brain are changing from kid versions to adult versions, which makes them seem less than smart and overly lazy.

By being attuned to their stages of development, you can communicate better with them knowing what to expect and why.

  1. Anticipate Language Barriers

Being attuned to your child’s development in language skills will help you understand their responses and reactions, and not get frustrated if they only respond to bits and piece of what you ask.  If you learned a foreign language for only a few years and heard a conversation among fluent speakers, would you understand it completely or only be able to pick out a word, phrase or topic here and there?

If several children hear, “Molly, can you come here” it is possible that several of them will come running instead of just Molly.  This is because they only heard the instructional phrase and not necessarily the name.  Kids apply the only language skills that they have at their age of development, which for a 3 or 4-year-old is only 3 or 4 years!

  1. Practice Response Flexibility

Probably the best thing you can do to improve your reactions as a parent is to practice response flexibility.  This means being flexible with your child’s mood and deciding what must be finished immediately, and what can wait.  Or, realizing that it is not necessary to be harsh every time something bad happens.

Recently my son decided it was a good idea to do a flip on top of me when I was on the couch and busted my nose.  Instead of yelling at him, I used response flexibility and kept my reaction in perspective because I know that he didn’t do it on purpose He was playing, and I had to keep that in perspective. Explaining what happened to them and using it as a teaching moment is a more responsible way to respond using response flexibility.

Attunement all comes down to how well you know your child and their moods, and how well you know yourself.  Start thinking about how you can help your child use the right behaviors by being more attuned to their development, behaviors, language skills and mood, and most importantly, try to practice response flexibility when the unexpected happens. Sometimes your child will learn more from how you respond than from what you say.
